Ongoing Series: OUTLAW ANIMALS

The initial idea of the Outlaw Animal Series was developed over a recent period of 2 years during which John and I traveled and camped in the American west. Working on location--painting and drawing--allowed us many intimate experiences with native animals. As is my habit, my plein-aire works (Annie Helmericks-Louder, Artist ), (Annie Helmericks-Louder Road-Trip Discoveries), often inspire my winter studio textile works and so it is with this series: Outlaw Animals.  As I often do in my work, I question established hierarchies.  The animals I have chosen to feature, jackrabbit, rattlesnakes, skunks, are often concerned “varmint” animals--or those animals designated as having no value. Miraculously evolved, they are suited perfectly for the often rugged and sparse environments that they inhabit. In the judgments of humans, however, they are often discounted and even despised. Particularly persecuted are those creatures that most resist having their lands taken away from them by human development. Many of these species have no closed season or bag limit; hunters are allowed to kill as many as they can catch.

No Room at the Table (80” X 120”, 5 total sections. art textile) “... is meant to elicit awareness. We are witnessing the disappearance of ice lands and green mansions. In the course of our consumption, more and more species — essential, living links — are being severed from the chain of land’s diversity. It is true — life continues. As I look out of the window, I see nature fulfill her ancient promise of spring once again. But still, by our disregard, apathy, need, or greed — humans are dropping the other hands of life. And in doing so, we are stepping out of the sacred circle.” Annie Helmericks-Louder, 2010

Fourteen artists were invited to create an installation of artworks featuring a sightline linking all the artwork in the exhibit.  Each artist chose her own themes and created five to eight artworks, including four 8x8" linking pieces, covering a ten foot wide space. Perhaps the required continuous line provided provocation, both conscious and unconscious, to the artists to focus on time, personal history, and memory.
