Sometimes I really do have a fairly clear idea, and can layout the design, pattern and assemble. More and more however, things just emerge as I work. This means a lot of cutting away, covering up, re-working into, etc.; this method takes more time. Actually though, if I forget about deadlines I like this way of working. Making art is an act of inquiry and exploration. So, I am ‘inquiring.’ Life is good this way. Although I hope each piece works out, the goodness is irrespective of the final product. Not a joke pic--I begin this piece by literally ripping and sawing into large pieces of lush silks and cottons. I want the fabrics to loose their ‘preciousness’. I want to distress their surfaces. I want the fabrics to loose their ‘preciousness’. I want to distress their surfaces. I pin up the cloth and just look at it for a couple of evenings as knit; forest creatures begin to appear. One of these evenings there is a commotion on the porch, my dog has backed a mother raccoon and 2 babies into the cat feeding corner. She screams in fierce protection for her children--her eyes blaze like fire. I think of how these intelligent creatures are considered vermin and ‘trash’ animals.
